Historic Reunion: Chola Dynasty Copper Plates Return to India

In a significant cultural event, the Netherlands has returned 11th-century Chola dynasty copper plates to India, marking a milestone in the bilateral relationship. This gesture was part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the Netherlands during his five-nation tour.

The copper plates, known as the Anaimangalam or Leiden Plates in the Netherlands, are valuable historical artefacts that document the history of the Chola dynasty. Weighing around 30 kilograms, the plates are divided into two sections featuring Sanskrit and Tamil texts and are linked by a bronze ring with the royal Chola seal.

Historically significant as critical evidence of Tamil heritage, the plates were acquired by the Netherlands in the 1700s. India's successful claim as the nation of origin led the Intergovernmental Committee on Return and Restitution to support their return. This occasion underscores the deepening ties between India and the Netherlands.
