Temples in Uttar Pradesh's major holy cities are gearing up for the 30-day Adhik Maas, also known as Purshottam Maas, which commences on Sunday with a series of events dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The period is marked by extensive prayers and rituals, aligning with the intricate Hindu lunar and solar calendar systems.

Astrologer Keshav Acharya elaborates that the lunar calendar comprises 12 months, totaling 354 or 355 days, contrasted with the Sun-based 365-day calendar. To balance this discrepancy, approximately every 32 months, an additional month, 'Adhik Maas', is incorporated. Historically linked with Lord Vishnu's Narasimha avatar, this extra month is synonymous with fervent religious observance.

In Mathura, large crowds are anticipated for 'parikramas' and 'mahabhishek' of the Girraj ji Hill. Special events at the Dwarikadish Temple, ISKCON Vrindavan's international congregation, and comprehensive security measures reflect the scale of this annual spiritual celebration. Meanwhile, Varanasi will maintain its tradition of abstaining from weddings and commercial transactions, ensuring a focus on prayer for the divine month.
