Controversial Salt Lake Stadium Sculpture to be Removed Amid Upgrades

In a significant move, the West Bengal government will take down a controversial football-themed sculpture that once graced the exterior of Salt Lake Stadium. The decision comes amid a broader plan for infrastructure upgrades at the iconic sports venue.

Sports Minister Nisith Pramanik articulated the government's stance against the sculpture designed by erstwhile Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, criticizing its aesthetics and lack of meaning. "Such an ugly-looking statue... does not make sense," he told reporters after the Indian Super League Kolkata derby.

Alongside the removal of the sculpture, Pramanik announced a series of enhancements at the stadium, including the installation of food courts to improve fan experience during extended matches. Initiatives to replace the Biswa Bangla logo with the Ashoka emblem across public infrastructure are also underway.
