Mexico City's iconic Azteca Stadium, soon to be renamed Estadio Ciudad de Mexico, is set to reopen in March 2026 ahead of the much-anticipated World Cup, Mayor Clara Brugada announced. Known for hosting the 1970 and 1986 finals, the stadium is undergoing an extensive renovation to meet FIFA standards.
The refurbishment will introduce state-of-the-art facilities, including new changing rooms and expanded hospitality areas, aiming for completion in early 2026. These upgrades are part of a broader initiative in Tlalpan, focusing on infrastructure improvements alongside maximizing operational readiness for the World Cup.
Mexico City also plans to engage its residents with a series of fan events across its boroughs, culminating in a grand FIFA Fan Fest at Zocalo square. This festival is designed to promote community participation with public screenings and various activities.
