Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Thursday pointed out that China has remained relatively neutral in its stance. Following the terror attack in Pahalgam, Tharoor emphasized the increasing significance of the Indian market to China, especially in the current global trade climate marked by high tariffs under the Trump administration.

In a decisive move, India launched Operation Sindoor with precision strikes targeting nine terrorist sites across Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. This was in retaliation to the Pahalgam attack that claimed 26 lives. Tharoor acknowledged that countries like Russia, France, and Israel have displayed notable understanding towards India's right to self-defense against terrorism.

While urging calm and restraint, Tharoor expressed hope that China would play a constructive role in preventing an escalation of tensions. He remarked on China's tempered stance and its avoidance of overtly supporting Pakistan, a deviation attributed to the evolving diplomatic relationship between Beijing and New Delhi. The Chinese Foreign Ministry's statements echoed a call for peace, urging both India and Pakistan to act in the broader interest of regional stability.
