Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has given the green light to urban development initiatives worth Rs 2,204.85 crore under the Swarnim Jayanti Mukhyamantri Shaheri Vikas Yojana (SJMMSVY). The projects intend to advance the vision of 'Earning Well, Living Well' by 2025, transforming cities into smart urban hubs. Approved funds will address local requirements and have been sanctioned after thorough reviews by Municipal Corporations, Municipalities, and Urban Development Authorities.

The 2024-25 budget for the Urban Development Department reflects a significant rise, setting aside Rs 30,325 crore—a 40% increase from the previous year. These funds aim to build citizen-oriented cities, accommodating specific municipal needs. Under the Mukhyamantri Shaheri Sadak Yojana, Patel has sanctioned Rs 597.73 crore for extensive roadworks in urban regions. This includes Rs 464.92 crore for Surat to revamp 857 roads, enhancing infrastructure as needed.

Further approvals feature Rs 68 crore for Bhavnagar's road upgrades and Rs 43.81 crore for Jamnagar. Mehsana receives Rs 21 crore for new roads and underpasses, while the SJMMSVY covers a range of projects from underground drainage to city beautification, totalling Rs 1,249.38 crore. New municipal corporations receive approvals, including Rs 200.35 crore for Porbandar. Patel's resolve to bolster urban development reinforces Gujarat's push towards becoming a model of sustainable urbanization.
