The Supreme Court on Wednesday took a firm stance, calling upon the Delhi government to explain the protracted delay in the construction of a trauma center intended to honor the victims of the tragic Uphaar fire disaster, which claimed 59 lives.
In response to a plea from the Association of Victims of Uphaar Tragedy (AVUT), the bench, comprised of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh, issued notices not only to the Delhi government but also to the Ansal brothers and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). This decisive move aims to address the decade-long inaction following the court's previous directives.
The Supreme Court had previously imposed a Rs 60 crore fine on the Ansal brothers for criminal negligence leading to the tragedy, directing this amount towards the trauma center's construction. Despite the funds being deposited with the Delhi Chief Secretary, the trauma center remains unbuilt, sparking further frustration from the victims' association, which criticized the sheer disregard for the court's orders and the pressing need for enhanced healthcare infrastructure.
