In a move underscoring rising tensions with Pakistan, the Himachal Pradesh government has activated a state-wide alert as per directives from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu will preside over a crucial security meeting on Friday to assess readiness and supply chain logistics, with top district officials attending virtually.
The alert follows 'Operation Sindoor,' where Indian forces reportedly targeted and dismantled terrorist camps across the border, retaliating for the slaying of Indian tourists in Jammu and Kashmir. The operation has fueled nationwide unity and a spirit of defiance. Precautionary measures include the closure of schools in Una, a district bordering Punjab, with future decisions left to district magistrates.
Speaking to ANI, Education Minister Rohit Thakur affirmed the closure decision, citing the heightened tension after the tragedy in Kashmir and the successful military response. Thakur emphasized Himachal Pradesh's notable military heritage, highlighting the state's high enlistment rates in the Indian Army and its continued support for national security efforts.
Una stands as the most vulnerable district due to its proximity to Punjab, while other areas like Chamba are under surveillance although they currently remain operational. 'Following intelligence input and MHA recommendations, schools in Punjab-adjacent districts are closed,' said Thakur. Shimla and broader northwestern regions are also on heightened alert.
Anticipating further guidance from the central government, state officials maintain vigilant oversight. Chief Minister Sukhu had previously convened a preparatory meeting, and Friday's scheduled discussions aim to ensure all-round preparedness amid the ongoing national security scenario.
