Kolkata Port Heightens Security Amid India-Pakistan Tensions

In response to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata has significantly bolstered its security protocols. Announced on Friday, the directive calls for heightened vigilance and immediate reporting of any suspicious activities on the premises and adjacent waterways.
A high-level virtual security review was conducted by T.K. Ramachandran, IAS, Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, along with Rathendra Raman, Chairman of SMP Kolkata, and other key port officials. Following these consultations, SMP Kolkata has increased its security level to 2, in accordance with directives from the Directorate General of Shipping.
Key measures include canceling all leaves for staff from May 10th to 14th, mandating employees remain at headquarters during off days, and enhancing cyber security. Regular security drills will be implemented, and access to port premises will be strictly controlled. These steps underscore the importance of maintaining a secure maritime trade gateway amid current national security challenges.
