In a groundbreaking move, the Rajasthan Forest Department has launched an extensive wildlife survey in the Jhalana forest area. This initiative, designed to track animal movements meticulously, began today, marking the commencement of a strategic effort to collect essential data on the presence and behavior of wildlife. The data will prove crucial ahead of the official enumeration exercise earmarked for June.

The initiative includes two distinct types of surveys: a sign survey and a camera trap survey. According to Jitendra Singh Shekhawat, the Regional Forest Officer, the sign survey involves teams patrolling designated grids to record animal signs such as pugmarks, scratches, and droppings. Concurrently, camera traps are being set up for a 25-day period to capture images and videos of wildlife, aiding in estimating population sizes. These camera traps will be put in place after the sign survey to assess the wildlife efficiently.

The survey commenced in the Amagarh forest from May 10 to 13 and is currently in progress in the Jhalana forest, scheduled to run until May 15. In addition to tracking animal movements, there is a heightened focus on monitoring water holes to ensure they are filled to support wildlife during the dry season. With 17 water holes in Jhalana, regular monitoring is implemented to maintain adequate water levels, crucial for wildlife survival this summer season.
