The Assam Police achieved a significant breakthrough by seizing a vast consignment of foreign-made cigarettes in Guwahati. Acting on a clandestine tip-off, the operation led to the arrest of two individuals allegedly involved in the smuggling racket.
The accused, identified as Chandan Barman, 48, and Pranjal Das, 25, were caught as officers intercepted the illegal trade operation in the Lalmati area of Guwahati on Sunday night. They were found unloading foreign cigarettes from a cement-laden LP truck into a pickup van.
According to Rajib Saikia, the Chief Public Relations Officer of Assam Police, 798 packets of ESSE Light Slim Cigarettes, sourced from Korea, were seized alongside the vehicles used in the illicit transport. The suspects failed to provide valid documents for the seized goods. Investigations are ongoing to uncover the broader network involved.
