In the wake of alleged gangrape at South Calcutta Law College, political and social tensions have surged across West Bengal. Suvendu Adhikari, Leader of Opposition, led a protest in Kolkata, supported by a significant turnout of BJP workers. Accusations flew as BJP criticizes the ruling TMC for a purported collapse in law and order.
Adhikari condemned Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's government, alleging a failure to safeguard women in the state and citing police inefficacy. The BJP's campaign against TMC follows public outrage over the incident. In a similar vein, BJP's Mahila Morcha took to the streets in Siliguri, demanding justice for the victim.
Union Minister and West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar echoed Adhikari's sentiments by attacking Banerjee's leadership. He described the state's law and order as "grave," blaming the Chief Minister for the recurring issues. Majumdar pledged continued protests, even as he faced detention from authorities.
The BJP's calls for Mamata Banerjee to resign come amidst a broader political discourse. Some national party leaders advocate for a more balanced approach, urging non-political justice. The TMC, in turn, faces internal criticism over insensitivity, exemplified by controversial comments from an MLA.
This issue has further spotlighted women's safety in West Bengal, with top BJP officials forming a fact-finding committee to investigate and report back to party leadership. As arrests occur and investigations continue, the demand for systemic change and accountability remains a robust theme.
