The National Green Tribunal (NGT) in New Delhi has concluded a significant case involving grave environmental breaches by dyeing industries based in Ghaziabad's Roop Nagar, Arya Nagar, and Tronica City.
The inquiry revealed the illegal discharge of pollutants by 19 industrial units and a Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP), contravening key environmental laws including the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, and the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981. In response, the NGT initially commissioned a Joint Committee to probe the violations.
Recent inspections, however, indicate marked improvements. Of the units inspected, 14 adhered to environmental standards, while five have voluntarily ceased operations. The CETP, scrutinized for poor performance in the past, now meets compliance standards, having elevated its operation and pollution control measures. Satisfied with the outcome, NGT's Principal Bench, including Justice Prakash Shrivastava and Dr. A. Senthil Vel, have dismissed the original plea, mandating the UPPCB to maintain vigilance via ongoing inspections to forestall future violations.
