An interdisciplinary team of experts has arrived in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, to engage in scientific research concerning recent extreme weather occurrences, such as cloudbursts and flash floods. Their mission follows a directive from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, prompted by discussions between Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The team, led by an advisor from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), comprises specialists from the Central Potato Research Institute, IITs Roorkee, Pune, Indore, and a retired meteorological scientist. They convened for a high-level meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary to strategize their approach.
Over the next few weeks, the team plans to collect data from regions most affected by recent disasters, integrating information from agencies like the India Meteorological Department. The goal is to understand the underlying causes of these events and develop recommendations for creating a disaster-resilient Himachal Pradesh.
