Fuel Price Hike Sparks Violent Protests in Angola

Unrest swept through Angola's capital, Luanda, as violent protests over a fuel price hike resulted in at least four fatalities and hundreds of arrests. The protests erupted after the government announced a one-third increase in diesel prices to alleviate the financial burden of fuel subsidies.

Following the announcement, minibus taxi associations responded with a three-day strike, further inflaming tensions. The strike, accompanied by looting and vandalism, saw over 500 individuals detained. Reports indicate that disruptions are still ongoing in certain areas of the capital, said national police spokesperson Mateus Rodrigues.

This latest wave of unrest mirrors previous protests in the oil-rich nation as it continues to reduce fuel subsidies. The ongoing disturbances underscore the challenges facing Angola in managing its public finances and maintaining social stability.
