In a significant legislative move, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal is poised to present 'The Merchant Shipping Bill, 2024' in the Lok Sabha. This bill intends to update and unify existing maritime laws, aligning them with global treaties to bolster India's shipping industry.
The proposed legislation will consolidate merchant shipping laws, ensuring they adhere to India's international maritime obligations while advancing the nation's shipping sector. The Lok Sabha is also examining 'The Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes in Assembly Constituencies of the State of Goa Bill, 2024,' aiming to facilitate equitable tribal representation.
Concurrently, the Rajya Sabha is set to extend President's Rule in Manipur by six months and deliberate on the Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill, 2025. Both legislative bodies, amid some initial session adjournments, are focused on proceeding with critical national matters as the Monsoon Session continues till August 21.
