The ongoing 2025 monsoon in Himachal Pradesh has unleashed severe consequences, with heavy rainfall causing extensive damage to both life and infrastructure. On Tuesday, landslides and flash floods blocked 309 roads, including the critical National Highway 305, disrupting travel and supply routes. The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has reported non-functional status for 236 water supply schemes and 113 power transformers.
The State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) revealed a grim tally of 184 deaths during the monsoon season from June 20 to August 3, 2025. Of these, 103 fatalities were directly linked to rain-related incidents such as landslides, flash floods, and electrocutions. Road accidents, largely occurring due to hazardous conditions on mountainous terrains, contributed to an additional 81 deaths. The SDMA has detailed widespread operational challenges, including blocked roads and critical interruptions to essential services.
District-wise analysis indicates Mandi district bears the brunt of the monsoon's fury, with 23 rain-induced deaths and significant infrastructure disruption, including 167 road blockages. Kangra and Kullu districts reported notable casualties as well, while Lahaul-Spiti and Kullu suffered critical access loss due to collapsed bridges and landslides. Continuing rainfall poses further risks of landslides and flash floods, hampering restoration efforts across the state.
