In a significant breakthrough for Assam Agriculture University (AAU), the newly developed purple rice variety named 'Labanya' has gained formal registration under the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers' Rights Authority. This marks a pioneering step in enhancing rice varieties with high nutritional value and commercial potential.
According to AAU's Public Relations Officer, Ranjit Kumar Hout, Labanya integrates the essential nutritional aspects of traditional black rice and customizes it for easier cultivation and consumption. The variety debuted on e-commerce platforms and is available commercially, accumulating widespread recognition and a consumer base reflective of its quality.
Labanya is designed to yield 4.5–5 tonnes per hectare and boasts a lower glycemic index, aromatic grains, and convenience in cooking. It is also rich in antioxidants and essential nutrients, paving the way for various value-added products. This innovative rice aims to overcome the limitations of conventional black rice, such as lower yields and longer cooking times, while preserving its health advantages.
