The Union government announced on Wednesday its achievement of retrofitting more than 1,800 public buildings and updating over 50,000 buses to meet accessibility standards. This initiative is part of the Accessible India Campaign (Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan), launched in 2015 to aid persons with disabilities.
Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, B L Verma, reported that Rs 564.50 crore was allocated to transform 1,835 government buildings. He emphasized that accessibility efforts are ongoing, involving significant stakeholder engagement to ensure universal accessibility.
The Ministry of Railways has installed ramps at 5,639 stations and made provisions for accessible parking and toilets at thousands of locations. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology certified 145 government websites as accessible, contributing to the nationwide push for inclusivity.
