Localised weak zones in the soil have delayed Haryana's first atomic power plant in Gorakhpur, the government disclosed to the Lok Sabha. The project, with two 700 MW units, was started in 2014 in Fatehabad district.

The delays result from unexpected soil conditions encountered since excavation began in 2018, a site without hard rock. Excavation and ground improvement methods, including compacted soil cement mix, couldn't address these challenges. A consultant investigated and recommended solutions now under regulatory review.

Significant project progress has been made, including placing orders for long-lead equipment. Major construction packages have been awarded, and work is proceeding, with regular monitoring and adjustments to ensure timely project advancement.
