Revolutionary Socialist Party MP NK Premachandran has launched a blistering attack on US President Donald Trump following the imposition of a 25% additional tariff on India over its purchases of Russian oil. In a statement to ANI, Premachandran described Trump's decision as inconsistent and a direct affront to India's sovereign rights. He assertively stated, "There is no consistency in the statements of President Trump. He is one way or another threatening and insulting the sovereign character of our country. It is not for America to decide whether we should purchase oil from Russia or other countries."

The MP applauded the Government of India's recent response to the contentious situation, arguing, "The latest response from the GoI is a welcome step that we have to face the consequences and see the alternative measures to overcome this issue." Premachandran also cast doubt on the tangible benefits of the rapport between Trump and Prime Minister Modi, suggesting that a diplomatic strategy reassessment is necessary in light of the strained trade relationship. "We are always narrating that President Trump is a friend of our Prime Minister, but that does not seem to help, and hence, we need to review the diplomatic strategy. America can never be relied upon, be it trade or anything else," Premachandran added.

Premachandran reminisced about how India triumphed over international sanctions following its 1998 nuclear tests, implying that the country could similarly navigate the current challenge. He urged India to impose reciprocal tariffs on the US in response to Trump's move. "Russia has already supported the cause of India, saying it is not a third country to determine this... Reciprocal tariff must be imposed by India as well. We are expecting GDP growth rate by 6.5%, and with this case, it will come down to 6.1%," Premachandran stated. Additionally, he indicated that the INDIA bloc would discuss the upcoming Bihar elections, signaling intense political discourse amidst these developments. Meanwhile, US President Trump justified the tariff hike by citing national security, foreign policy concerns, and India's increasing Russian oil imports as an extraordinary threat. The Ministry of External Affairs termed the move "unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable," asserting that New Delhi would take all necessary actions to safeguard its national interests.
