The Indian Army has officially inducted the Mechanical Minefield Marking Equipment Mark-II (MMME Mk-II), marking a significant stride in military capability. Developed collaboratively by Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), this system is engineered to rapidly mark and fence minefields with reduced manual labor.
BEML, a key player in India's defense sector, emphasized this induction as a substantial step towards national self-sufficiency in defense production. 'This achievement highlights the combined expertise of the Armed Forces, DRDO, and BEML in advancing indigenous technology under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative,' the company stated.
The MMME Mk-II, built by DRDO's Research and Development Establishment (Engineers) in Pune and manufactured by BEML, is designed to operate efficiently in diverse terrains, including deserts and plains. This innovation enhances operational speed while ensuring troop safety, as discussed during the induction by Sanjay Som, BEML's Director of Defence, alongside senior military officials.
With the capability to operate cross-country with a full load of stores, the MMME Mk-II allows the Indian Army to mark minefields swiftly, utilizing a High Mobility Vehicle equipped with advanced systems. This reduces time and manpower needed during operations, boosting the Army's operational effectiveness.
The semi-automatic system, mounted on a TATRA 6x6 chassis, places pickets at varying intervals to efficiently mark minefields. Each system unspools ropes from ten spools, aiding in swift deployment, as detailed by DRDO. The equipment is versatile, capable of operation in extreme temperatures and varied geographical conditions, enhancing the Army's preparedness and safety standards.
