In the wake of the United States imposing additional tariffs on Indian exports, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has called for a robust response from India. On Friday, Tharoor expressed concerns over the shifting dynamics between the two nations, historically strategic partners, and emphasized the necessity for India to safeguard its interests.
Tharoor proposed that India should consider increasing its tariffs on American products to 50% as a countermeasure, up from the current 17%. Highlighting the substantial $90 billion trade relationship, he questioned why India should restrain itself and urged that no country should be allowed to intimidate India with such trade tactics.
Pointing to the United States' reasoning, including national security concerns linked to India's Russian oil imports, Tharoor criticized the justification as 'unfair and unjustified.' Meanwhile, the Ministry of External Affairs also denounced the US move, declaring New Delhi's intent to take all necessary actions to protect its national interests.
