BJP MP Raju Bista unleashed a strong critique against the state Public Works Department (PWD), local leaders, and contractors, accusing them of corruption in maintaining National Highway 10. He argued that these parties have exploited the road as a 'milk-producing cow', primarily as a revenue source rather than for public welfare.
During his visit to Kalimpong, Bista lamented that despite Prime Minister Modi's allocation of thousands of crores for development, the funds have not reached the populace. Citing NH-10, which links Siliguri and Sikkim, he noted that the road remains unusable during the rainy season despite substantial yearly investments, attributing the neglect to local authorities and contractors.
Expressing optimism, Bista welcomed the highway's recent transfer to the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHAIDCL). However, he cautioned against continued negligence, warning he would resort to protest if necessary. Meanwhile, recent landslides due to heavy rains have damaged several sections of NH-10, impacting traffic and projects, although the crucial T7 Adit Tunnel remains unaffected according to IRCON International Ltd.
