NHRC Probes Tragic Death at Kanpur Medical College Amid Allegations of Negligence

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has initiated a suo motu investigation into alarming reports regarding the death of a 25-year-old patient at Kanpur Medical College in Uttar Pradesh. Allegations point to significant failures in hospital administration and police response that may have contributed to the tragedy.

Identified as Sundar, the patient was admitted to the hospital's emergency ward on August 9, 2025. The attending doctor advised transferring Sundar for advanced care, but with no attendant present, the hospital sought police assistance to provide an escort. Reports indicate a police escort was not provided for six to seven hours, during which Sundar tragically died.

The incident is further exacerbated by the fact that Sundar's body remained in the ward for hours after death, moved only when a foul smell forced other patients to leave. The NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police of Uttar Pradesh, seeking comprehensive reports over the handling of the situation, amid conflicting police and hospital narratives.
