In a bold statement, Congress MP Karti Chidambaram has criticized the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), alleging that the party has surrendered its independence and become a 'wholly-owned subsidiary' of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This comes as AIADMK prepares to contest in the forthcoming 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections in alliance with the BJP against the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).

Chidambaram emphasized the AIADMK's diminished autonomy, asserting that the party frequently turns to Delhi for resolving internal issues, which he claims reflects a loss of independence and erodes public confidence in the party. Meanwhile, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami's recent visit to New Delhi marks a continuation of their strategic alliance with BJP as he expresses gratitude for the support the BJP extended post-Jayalalithaa's demise, despite internal party disputes.

The AIADMK is grappling with demands to reintegrate former leaders, a call initiated by Gobichettipalayam MLA KA Sengottaiyan. However, Palaniswami's decision to relieve Sengottaiyan from party positions highlights ongoing internal power struggles, despite some support for reunification from figures such as O Panneerselvam and VK Sasikala.
