In a surprising move, Bangladesh's Election Commission has barred former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her family from participating in the forthcoming national elections, the local press reported Thursday. Slated for February, these elections are organized under the interim administration helmed by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus.
Expats eager to cast their votes will have to register online using their National Identity (NID) numbers, clarified Akhtar Ahmed, Senior Secretary of the Bangladesh Election Commission. Unfortunately, Sheikh Hasina and ten of her relatives had their NIDs blocked, disqualifying them from registering and voting, according to the Jugantor daily.
Since seeking asylum in India following an uprising last year, Hasina's voting rights have been in contention, with official confirmation arriving now. The government and election officials are keen on ensuring that the elections are fair, set to occur before Ramadan begins in February 2026.
