Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday communicated with Nepal's interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki to extend his condolences following the deadly protests led by Gen Z activists. Modi expressed India's unwavering support for Nepal in regaining peace and stability while extending his greetings for the country's National Day.
The conversation occurred shortly after Sushila Karki assumed her role as interim PM, following the Nepal Parliament's dissolution amid violent demonstrations. These protests emerged from frustration with government corruption, lack of accountability, and an enforced social media ban.
Karki, lauded for her integrity, becomes Nepal's first female Prime Minister, and she will hold this position until March 2026. Endorsed by the protesters, her appointment was backed by the Gen Z movement that has reshaped Nepal's political landscape.
Ealier in the week, India's Ambassador to Nepal, Naveen Srivastava, met with Karki, conveying Prime Minister Modi's congratulations. Srivastava reiterated India's commitment to strengthening the bonds between the two nations.
