A tragic incident unfolded off Libya's coast as a boat transporting Sudanese refugees caught fire and sank, killing at least 50 people, the International Organisation for Migration reported. The disaster occurred as the vessel was heading toward Greece.
The United Nations migration agency revealed the boat sank approximately 60 kilometers off Tobruk's coast in eastern Libya. Earlier, it had been reported that 75 Sudanese refugees were aboard, with only 24 survivors found, marking yet another sorrowful event for migrants attempting to reach Europe through hazardous routes.
Libya, a significant transit point for those fleeing war and poverty in Africa and the Middle East, has witnessed numerous such tragedies. The IOM's Missing Migrants Project noted that at least 434 migrants have died or gone missing off Libya's coast in the last eight months, underlining the ongoing migrant crisis.
