In a significant move, the Uttarakhand government has declared its intention to file a review petition in the Supreme Court, contesting the recent acquittal of accused individuals in the 2014 Pithoragarh rape and murder of a minor. This decision follows consultations with legal experts, reflecting public outcry over safety concerns.
The case dates back to November 2014, when a minor girl went missing from a wedding gathering in Haldwani. Her body was later retrieved from the Gaula River, with postmortem results confirming sexual assault and homicide. Despite initial convictions, the Supreme Court's recent verdict to acquit the accused has provoked the state's pursuit of judicial reconsideration.
Simultaneously, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has been actively assessing damage control efforts in Chamoli district, following a devastating cloudburst. With over 200 people affected, rescue teams have been deployed, working tirelessly to aid injured residents and repair infrastructure amidst ongoing monsoon challenges.
