Empowering Women: The Backbone of India's Small-Scale Fisheries

A recent study has shed light on the significant role that women play in India's small-scale fisheries industry, contributing to both nourishment and economic stability across coastal and inland regions.

According to research by Global Illuminating Hidden Harvests, roughly 4.8 million women, or four in ten workers, are employed in this sector. Their invaluable contributions cover the entire value chain, from pre-harvest activities to post-harvest processing and trade.

Despite generating USD 2.3 billion annually, their efforts often go unrecognized in policy circles. At a three-day meeting in Chennai, experts stressed the need for better representation in governance to ensure their contributions are duly acknowledged.
