At least 18 people have lost their lives in Darjeeling as relentless rains hit North West Bengal, officials revealed on Monday. The extensive downpour, which began on Saturday night, has caused significant damage and chaos in the region.

Authorities confirmed Mirik witnessed 11 fatalities, while Jorebunglow, Sukhia Pokhari, and Darjeeling Sadar experienced additional losses. The district administration has not ruled out an increase in casualties as some residents, particularly near rivers, remain unaccounted for.

Rescue operations have been underway, with the National Disaster Response Force evacuating over 160 people amid severe floods, utilizing boats and zip lines in areas like Jalpaiguri. President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed their condolences and pledged government assistance for affected families.

The heavy rains have led to landslides, destroying roads, homes, and even an iron bridge over the Balasan river. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held an emergency meeting detailing the disaster's extensive toll, particularly in Mirik and Sukhia Pokhari, and coordinating immediate state aid.

Amid widespread destruction in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduar, Banerjee announced the closure of tourist spots and activated emergency helplines. The state's priority remains rescue and relief operations, as efforts to restore normalcy continue.
