At least three fatalities, including two women, were reported after heavy rains induced a landslide in Mirik, Darjeeling. The incident, reported by officials, occurred early morning on October 5, claiming the lives of Bijendra Rai (62), Usha Rai (62), and Satma Lama (35).
Rinchen Lama, son-in-law of the victims, recounted the event, explaining that he was outside the house when the disaster struck. Awakened by the flooded house and debris, he realized the tragedy too late. He stated, "My in-laws and sister were asleep inside due to the heavy rain. By morning, water and landslide debris had covered the area," Rinchen Lama informed ANI.
The devastation extended beyond Mirik, affecting the entire Darjeeling region. Landslides also caused a bridge to collapse, resulting in seven fatalities and multiple road closures. Rescue operations have become crucial with seven confirmed dead, numerous people missing, and more than 100 individuals evacuated.
Kurseong's Additional Superintendent of Police, Abhishek Roy, confirmed the recovery of seven bodies from debris, and the ongoing search for two more victims.
