In a bid to safeguard tomato farmers from incurring losses, Andhra Pradesh Agriculture Minister K Atchannaidu has pledged governmental support. Heavy rains have disrupted the supply chain to neighboring states like Telangana, Karnataka, and Maharashtra, impacting farmers significantly.
To mitigate this issue, the minister highlighted that tomato prices at the Rapthadu market currently range from Rs 9 to Rs 18 per kg. Efforts are underway to manage the limited supply, with no more than 40 tonnes reaching the Pattikonda market.
Measures include the procurement of 10 tonnes of tomatoes to supply government-run rythu bazaars and an additional 15 tonnes to be processed at a Chittoor-based unit. These interventions aim to stabilize the market and support farmers by facilitating direct sales to consumers, thus eliminating middlemen.
