Odisha's Deputy Chief Minister, Pravati Parida, has launched a scathing criticism against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over her contentious remark suggesting girls should not be allowed out at night. This criticism follows an alleged gangrape incident involving a medical student from Odisha in Durgapur.
Parida expressed her disapproval, terming Banerjee's comment as a significant insult to women in the state. She urged the West Bengal Chief Minister to provide a written statement demonstrating her compassion for the survivor, stressing that it is the state's responsibility to ensure justice for victims.
The alleged crime has led to the arrests of three individuals. Amid the backlash, Sovana Mohanty, Chairperson of the Odisha State Commission for Women, also criticized Banerjee, emphasizing the need for assurance of women's safety rather than restricting their freedom.
