The Czech power company CEZ has entered into a pivotal agreement with Rolls-Royce SMR to spearhead preparatory work for the first small modular nuclear reactor in the Czech Republic. This groundbreaking deal, signed on Friday, aims to establish necessary project plans and licensing documentation critical for securing building permits for the reactor.
CEZ's chief executive, Daniel Benes, expressed optimism regarding the completion of all approvals by 2030, with construction set to occur at the Temelin nuclear plant site. This venture marks the second small reactor project by Rolls-Royce SMR, with the first already underway in the UK, backed by Great Britain Energy – Nuclear, a government agency.
CEZ, holding a 20% equity in Rolls-Royce SMR, seeks to amplify energy capacity in the country through a strategic partnership, targeting up to 3 gigawatt installations. The Czech government, with an existing 70% stake in CEZ, is advancing plans to fully acquire the company amid growing interest in cost-efficient, scalable nuclear solutions.
