Push for Year-Round E15 Sales: A Boost for Consumers?

On Thursday, representatives of ethanol producers, farmers, and fuel retailers made an urgent appeal to Congress to authorize the year-round sale of higher-ethanol gasoline blends at gas stations. The proposed measure aims to alleviate the high pump prices persisting since the onset of the conflict in Iran.

The groups champion an amendment to the comprehensive Farm Bill, enabling but not mandating fuel retailers to offer E15 gasoline nationwide throughout the year. Traditionally prohibited during summer for smog concerns, the blend has seen temporary allowances by the Trump Administration to mitigate the escalating costs of retail gasoline, which recently surpassed $4 a gallon.

This initiative, introduced by a cohort of over 20 lawmakers spearheaded by Representative Michelle Fischbach of Minnesota, surfaces amid the House Committee on Rules deliberations. Amidst a global energy crunch exacerbated by Iran's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, retail gasoline prices have climbed, causing economic distress. Notably, President Donald Trump has expressed support for this legislative push, promising swift endorsement.
