The Patiala House Court has granted a two-day transit remand for Iqbal Singh, also known as Shera, following his extradition from Portugal. Singh is implicated in a significant Hizbul Mujahideen-associated narco-terrorism case, allegedly orchestrating heroin smuggling operations from Pakistan into India.
This transit remand, provided by Special NIA Judge Prashant Sharma, aims to facilitate Singh's presentation before a Mohali court. While the NIA had requested three days of custody, defense counsel Piyush Sachdeva countered, arguing the proximity of Mohali did not necessitate such an extended duration.
Shera was the subject of a non-bailable warrant since 2020, with an Interpol notice issued in 2021. Considered a pivotal figure in the HM terror financing scheme, Shera purportedly managed drug trafficking networks, directing proceeds through hawala to support HM operatives. The NIA continues its investigation following significant recoveries from Shera's associates.
