Panic Buying Causes Fuel Frenzy in Odisha Despite Adequate Supply

Panic buying spurred by a misinterpretation of an advisory led to long queues at petrol stations in Odisha, prompting government reassurances of adequate fuel supply. The situation emerged as confusion followed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's remarks on fuel austerity.
In cities like Bhubaneswar, Jeypore, and Kalahandi, petrol pumps saw crowds and some deployed barricades to control the situation. Limits were imposed on purchases, with two-wheelers getting fuel up to Rs 200, while four-wheelers capped at Rs 2,000.
Despite temporary shortages at about 100 of Odisha's 3,000 fuel outlets, Utkal Petroleum Dealers Association assured timely refills. The situation was attributed to heightened demand after the PM's message was misconstrued, stressing the absence of an actual fuel shortage.
