The Chinese government has called on the United Kingdom to exercise caution as it mulls the nationalisation of British Steel. China's plea comes after Britain took operational control from Chinese firm Jingye in April 2025, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer hinting at complete nationalisation.
Beijing's commerce ministry issued a statement, emphasizing that it will closely monitor developments and champion the legitimate rights of Chinese businesses involved. The UK government, meanwhile, has assured its commitment to uphold business rights.
The UK legislation in question would only be enforced if the public interest test is deemed satisfied, according to a British government spokesperson. The situation unfolds against a backdrop of international trade tensions and economic strategy maneuvers.
