A recent analysis published in The Lancet journal exposes alarming figures of sexual violence encountered by children worldwide before reaching adulthood. According to the study, over 30% of girls and 13% of boys in India experienced such violence before turning 18 in 2023.
The comprehensive study estimates the prevalence of childhood sexual violence from 1990 to 2023, revealing that South Asia holds the highest rates, particularly in India and Bangladesh. Shockingly, one in five girls and one in seven boys globally are subjected to such violence before age 18.
The research highlights significant gaps in data coverage and calls for expanded global efforts in prevention and support systems, stressing the critical need for targeted advocacy to address this human rights crisis.
