In response to a viral outbreak resulting in the death of 14 horses and mules, a ban on the movement of these equines along the Kedarnath trek route remains enforced. Uttarakhand's Animal Husbandry Minister Saurabh Bahuguna evaluated the crisis during his visit to Sonprayag, emphasizing preventive measures.
Local authorities are considering a trial run for healthy mules and horses to resume carrying goods from Gaurikund to Kedarnath. Meanwhile, pilgrims find it challenging without the usual equine services, especially the elderly and injured, forced to use alternative modes of transport like the Dandi-Kandi.
Over 16,000 equines have undergone testing, with sick ones quarantined. The administration, however, has yet to specify the number quarantined. Officials announced plans for veterinary centers along the route and committed to free treatment and government compensation for affected animal owners.
