The State Association of Medical and Dental College Teachers (SAMDCOT) has voiced strong opposition to the Himachal Pradesh government's decision to bifurcate the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The move involves shifting the Gynaecology unit from Kamla Nehru Hospital to Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC).
According to SAMDCOT representatives, this decision is unprecedented and contradicts established medical and academic practices. They argue that a unified OBG department is essential for coordinated patient care and academic training, especially in teaching institutions. The association warns that the division will compromise patient care and disrupt structured training programs.
The contention also revolves around the stated goal of introducing robotic surgery at IGMC. SAMDCOT argues that current robotic surgery availability is limited and doesn't justify the department split. The association points out that Kamla Nehru Hospital has planned expansions that could be jeopardized by this decision.
