The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) unveiled the SEHAT initiative, a national program designed to integrate agriculture, nutrition, and public health. The launch event, attended by Union Health Minister J P Nadda and Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, highlighted the strategic significance of this collaboration aimed at enhancing health outcomes through agricultural advancements.
Minister Nadda emphasized India's transition from a reactive, curative healthcare model to a proactive, preventive approach. He noted how SEHAT exemplifies this shift. The initiative underscores the importance of affordable, high-quality indigenous innovations in healthcare, focusing on diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines to address India's dual disease burden: malnutrition and non-communicable diseases like diabetes and cancer.
Minister Chouhan described the initiative as 'unprecedented and historic', underscoring the synergy between agriculture and health sectors. He stressed the vital role of ICAR in ensuring nutritious food systems and ICMR's role in validating the interventions. Chouhan highlighted the potential of aligning agricultural practices with nutritional needs as a public health strategy, suggesting that 'food itself can become medicine'.
