Uncharted Waters: Cruise Ship Faces Hantavirus Crisis
The Dutch-flagged MV Hondius, operated by Oceanwide Expeditions, faces uncertainty in its schedule after a hantavirus outbreak led to three deaths. While the company seeks clarity on future sailings, over 120 passengers have been quarantined, and crew remain aboard, as the ship heads to Rotterdam.
The MV Hondius, a Dutch-flagged cruise ship, is at the center of a hantavirus outbreak that has resulted in three fatalities. The vessel's operator, Oceanwide Expeditions, hopes to confirm its future cruise schedule later this week, despite the recent health crisis.
Following the outbreak, the remaining 120 passengers were disembarked and quarantined across various countries, while the ship continued its journey toward Rotterdam. Oceanwide Expeditions had previously expressed intentions to commence a new voyage on May 29.
Concerns linger as health officials investigate whether the Andes virus, detected on the Hondius, can spread between people. So far, 11 cases have been reported, with nine confirmed. Crew members and health workers aboard remain symptom-free.
