West Bengal is poised to enhance its healthcare system as the National Health Mission nears implementation. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced at a Kolkata health department event that the Centre has allocated Rs 2,103 crore for this scheme, promising improved medical services for residents statewide.
Adhikari emphasized that over 1.36 crore families in West Bengal would benefit from the Ayushman Bharat scheme, with each receiving health insurance coverage up to Rs 5 lakh at designated hospitals. This initiative offers significant support to the state's healthcare infrastructure and aims to provide accessible services to migrant workers employed throughout India.
The government has planned for the establishment of medical colleges in districts like Alipurduar, Kalimpong, Dakshin Dinajpur, and Paschim Bardhaman, ensuring that each area benefits from modern medical education and facilities. Additionally, Pradhan Mantri Janaushadhi Kendras across the state will provide medications for serious conditions at subsidized rates.
A new central control room at Swasthya Bhavan will enable 24/7 oversight of district hospitals, with a focus on eliminating middlemen and improving hospital accountability. Private hospitals granted land at reduced rates are required to reserve a portion of beds for economically disadvantaged patients, ensuring no one is denied essential healthcare services.
