In a renewed effort to strengthen ties with Taiwan, US Senators John Curtis, a Republican, and Jeff Merkley, a Democrat, have reintroduced the Taiwan Relations Reinforcement Act. This legislative move is designed to affirm America's support for Taiwan's democratic values and its role on the international stage amid mounting pressure from China, as highlighted by the Central News Agency (CNA). The bill marks its fourth introduction following unfruitful attempts in 2020, 2021, and earlier in 2023.
Senator Curtis emphasized the strategic and moral significance of the US-Taiwan alliance in the Indo-Pacific region, outlining the act's intention to elevate the standing of the top US diplomat in Taiwan, promote high-level governmental exchanges, and counter disinformation campaigns orchestrated by the Chinese Communist Party. Should the act pass, it will reposition the director of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) as a 'representative,' thereby requiring Senate approval, akin to ambassadorial appointments, according to Focus Taiwan's report.
The legislation proposes several strategic initiatives, including the formation of an interagency task force to report on US-Taiwan relations to Congress annually, and a directive for the US government to advocate for Taiwan's involvement in international organizations. It also seeks to enhance economic and military collaborations through high-level bilateral and multilateral engagements. The bill must be approved by both the Senate and the House of Representatives and receive the president's signature to become law, as reported by ANI.
