India Monitors China's Disputed Brahmaputra Hydropower Project

The Indian government is keeping a close watch on China's initiation of a large-scale hydropower project on the Brahmaputra River in Tibet. In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs highlighted its vigilance over developments on the lower reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo River.

Since its announcement in 1986, this project has sparked concern in India over potential impacts on interests and local communities. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh emphasized that the government takes every necessary step to safeguard Indian interests and presses China for transparency and proper consultation with downstream nations.

The government reiterates its commitment to protect regional interests, actively discussing transboundary river issues under the 2006-established Expert Level Mechanism. They urge China to ensure upstream activities do not damage downstream states. Highlighted during recent bilateral talks is the resumption of hydrological data provision, underscoring India's proactive stance for its citizens' welfare.
