In a significant diplomatic gesture, the Ambassador of India to Nepal, Naveen Srivastava, met with Nepal's newly appointed Prime Minister, Sushila Karki, at Singha Durbar. The visit on Tuesday was underscored by a congratulatory message from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saluting Karki as the first woman to hold this esteemed position.
Karki's historic elevation, deep-rooted in a grassroots movement led by Gen Z, marks a pivotal moment in Nepal's political arena. The recent wave of protests, motivated by discontent over corruption and lack of governance transparency, amplified Karki's nomination, showcasing a paradigm shift driven by young activists. She will serve as interim Prime Minister until March 5, 2026.
The interim administration now includes three newly inducted ministers. Kulman Ghising ventures into the Ministry of Energy, Urban Development, and Physical Infrastructure; Om Prakash Aryal assumes leadership of the Ministry of Law and Home Affairs; and Rameshwor Khanal, a seasoned finance professional, steps into the Ministry of Finance. These strategic appointments mark the beginning of a transformative era in Nepal's governance.
