Amidst strained diplomatic relations, a United States delegation, headed by Central Intelligence Agency Director John Ratcliffe, initiated discussions with Cuban officials in Havana. The meeting signifies a unique opportunity for dialogue despite the longstanding friction between the two nations.

According to an official statement from the Cuban government, the discussions, held on May 14, were requested by the US and approved by the 'Directorate of the Revolution.' The Cuban authorities used the occasion to present compelling evidence that refutes the notion of Cuba being a threat to US national security. Furthermore, they challenged the rationale behind Cuba's inclusion on the US list of state sponsors of terrorism.

The Cuban government reasserted its firm stance against terrorism, emphasizing that it neither supports nor harbors any terrorist or extremist entities. Both nations also expressed mutual interest in enhancing cooperation between law enforcement and security agencies. This meeting unfolds as tensions persist due to sanctions, migration issues, and Cuba's terrorist designation.
